Business Casual

It’s best to check with Human Resources as to how they define business casual, especially if you’re new on the job. The general idea is to wear clothing that does not draw too much attention while looking smart and clean.

A long sleeve blouse is usually safe, especially if it has a collar. Blouses of cotton, silk and blends work well. A nice sweater will give you a professional look as well. Showing cleavage is not appropriate. Blouses or tops worn with basic pants or a skirt in black, navy, gray or khaki will give you a professional but comfortable look. No jeans please. For a business-like appearance, pants should be creased and tailored. Pants that are too tight or too baggy are not acceptable for the workplace.

• A leather belt worn with comfortable shoes in a neutral color, to coordinate with your outfit, will top off the look.

•  Socks should be of a coordinating color and high enough to avoid showing bare skin when you are seated while wearing pants.

•  Never wear athletic shoes unless you walk to work.  In that case, carry a nice leather pair to slip on once you get there.

•  Wearing hose is recommended if your skirt is knee high.  Showing too much skin is to be avoided.

•  How you choose your attire, speaks volumes about your judgment.  In cold weather, for example, you would not want to show up in a skirt with bare legs.

•  Clothes that are well pressed always give a nice sharp appearance in the workplace.

Accessories should be kept simple and conservative. It’s important to stay informed of the changes in trends when it comes to scarves and jewelry. Always keep it simple for a business environment. Steer clear of extremes in color and style. Of course this spring, bold colors are in so you might want to experiment with a little more color. If you carry a purse, keep it simple. Bags that are structured tend to appear more business-like. Ask your DRES stylist for ways to bring out your brilliance no matter what you wear.
