Beauty Is Diversity

Looking back, the prediction of Time Magazine's cover issue from 1993 was very accurate. http://www.time.com/time/covers/0,16641,19931118,00.html

It isn’t hard to remember a time when the ideal woman in America was the blue eyed, blonde Caucasian. But that standard of beauty has long since passed. According to Allure’s 20th Anniversary Beauty Survey, the new American beauty is a hybrid of cultures, sporting more curves, fuller lips and darker skin. The survey found that “sixty-four percent of all…respondents think women of mixed race represent the epitome of beauty.”

What this change says about beauty is that it does not have a concrete definition. It is in constant change, following influential people’s preferences and the culture of the era. As the world continues to become more and more globally connected and influenced, beauty is becoming something even less defined.

When the different ideals of beauty from each culture and country come together, beauty is found anew in diversity. It is found in models of varying shape and color. It is found in freckles in a skin cream ad, in women of ethnic diversity gracing magazine covers. Diversity is found in beauty because beauty is not limited to one race, one age or one preference. Rather, it encompasses a world of ideals.

Each individual woman has beauty within them, each a part of the diverse picture that makes up what beauty is. All we need to do is celebrate the diversity of our beauty, and allow our selves to shine.

With diversity comes liberation. As our consciousness changes, and racial and cultural stereotypes erode, we recognize that there is no standard for beauty. We are lucky to be living during these times.
